90's babies stand up!! MTV brought back the classic music countdown show Total Request Live for one day only yesterday on July 2. What is the cause for this impromptu trip down memory lane you ask? Well we can all thank Ariana Grande (seriously THANK YOU !!); the powerhouse singer, who recently celebrated her big 2-1, used the iconic show to debut her new single " Break Free" and also performed an acoustic version of her chart topping single "Problem" (sadly without our girl Iggy Azalea). She also made the big announcement that she will be performing at the MTV Video Music Awards this August. The R&B darling also interacted with fans and had a little fun on the set of TRL, which has not changed a bit since it graced our television screens. Hosted by Sway Calloway the thirty minute revival definitely served a great dose of nostalgia.
TRL was the prime outlet to showcase top musicians, bands, actors and celebrities. It welcomed us home from school with the top 10 ten most requested videos and we were enthralled for an hour. It is refreshing to see MTV recognizing the need to integrate more music into their programming amongst all the scripted dramas and reality shows. It is a smart move to compete with other music program channels, like newcomer Revolt.
What do you think of this new approach that MTV is taking with their programming?
